The advanced placement language courses will cover the equivalent of a 3rd year college course in advanced conversation, grammar and composition. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills are emphasized according to their weight on the AP exam. The participants will prepare for and complete the Advanced Placement Language exam given by the College Board. Possible college credit and/or advanced standing is available at recognized colleges and universities. This course can be taken for credit only once. The cost for the AP exam is approximately $75.00. This course is an introduction to basic grammatical structures; pronunciation; vocabulary; development of listening comprehension, reading, speaking, and writing skill; and development of cultural knowledge. The course objectives are: the students will be introduced to essential structures of German grammar, build their basic German vocabulary; develop their ability to comprehend, speak, read and write German; be introduced to significant aspects of German culture; demonstrate a working knowledge of the grammatical structures; apply vocabulary in communication involving each of the four language skills; and demonstrate higher order thinking skills through analyses of the German language and culture, including comparison and contrast with their own language and culture.

The course will provide a review of fundamental grammatical structures and an introduction to more complex structures; use library materials as well as conversation and listening comprehension activities to increase cultural awareness; encourage a future refinement of reading, conversation, and listening comprehension skills, and offer practice in written composition. The objectives are that the students will: review and demonstrate a working knowledge of the essential structures of German grammar introduced in German I and II; expand active and passive German vocabulary and apply this vocabulary in communication involving each of the four language skills; develop and demonstrate critical thinking skills; further develop their awareness of German culture and history; and further develop and refine their ability to comprehend, speak, read and write German.

This course will place emphasis on active use of the language for communication; and on independent and guided conversation, listening comprehension, and composition activities and readings of German literature, culture and history at the intermediate level. It will continue the refinement and development of speaking and writing skills, analyze the German culture and its relation to American culture and modern day life and prepare for the Advanced Placement German class. The objectives are that the students will use German vocabulary, structure and syntax at the intermediate level and refine all language skills in both formal and informal situations; read various types of writings (newspapers, literary works, non-technical writing,) orally and in writing both more fluently and accurately at the intermediate level.
